I was curious about the Merrill/Wynn connection. Could you enlighten me? Thank you Sarah
You will have to give us more information for us to be able to help you. Who specifically are you searching for? What Wynn m. what Merrill? when and where? b., m., d. dates will be helpful. The more info you can give us, the more likely we will be able to help you.
Let us introduce ourselves. We are Howard and Jean Merrill. For thirty years we have been trying to database the Merrill/Merrell family nationwide from the original immigrants down to the present day for all immigrant lines. So far we have info on over 60,000 Merrill males plus their wives and daughters in our database, but we estimate there have been well over a 100,000 so we have a long way to go, and need and appreciate all the help we can get, particularly with the later generations. We use this database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill roots. Be assured that no info on living individuals will become internet accessible from us.
While our database is not internet searchable, we will be glad to search it for anybody and share what we find at no cost. All we ask is that folks share their Merrill data with us so that we can expand our database and do a better job of helping solve Merrill lineage problems.
We do have a Merrill male m. to a Flora Wynn in NC in 1916, but we have no way of knowing if this if the family you are searching for.

I have additional info and pictures of Merrills from Atlanta ga descended from Albert H (?HUEVE) merrill What info do you need and how much detail I would be interested in a family tree of the Merrills from Nathaniel Merrill Are you interested in any jof the spouses of the Merrills and their backgrounds. I am actually Arthur J merrill III but Dad changed his name and dropped the JR when his father died.
Thank you for your kind offer of pictures, but with a database of over 60,000 Merrill males plus wives and daughters, we don't have storage space, physical or computer, to save pictures, except for our immediate family. We are interested in spouses and their parents, but we don't go beyond their parents. Likewise we would like to know who the Merrill daughters m. but we don't try to follow their children. We stick strictly to the Merrill surname [and it's spelling variations].
We have Albert's middle name as Herve. We had you in our database, but only as b. ca 1940's from a Who's Who entry for your dad, but nothing about your family or your brothers and their families. We would like to bring this line down to the present day. What we need are names, b., m., d. dates and location. Be assured that our database is not on line, and we do not publish or give out info on living individuals, but refer anyone asking back to the one that gave us the data.
We can prepare for you a Genealogy Report of your line from immigrant Nathaniel down to you, but why don't we wait till you send the data on your family then it will be complete to the present day. It may take a while, we have a couple from France visiting us all next week, then we are preparing for a trip to cruise the Norwegian coast for most of May. If you don't get it in a reasonable time, just remind us.
It is interesting that your query came today. Just last week we had a query from your 3rd cousin, Holly Childs, a descendant of Albert's brother Barzille W.

Dear Howard & Jean,
First and foremost, thank you for the time and effort you have put into your studies on the Merrill family! I cannot even begin to think how much time you have used putting this information together. Thank you!
My brother and I have been looking into our father's family. We never knew much about them. We were told that Frank Dow Merrill of Merrill's Marauders was in our family line, but unfortunately we aren't sure of anything past Arthur Merrill. The only piece of information leading us to believe this may be our line is an obituary for Gus Merrill stating that one of his sons (Arthur) lived in Seattle, Washington. Would you mind helping us figure out if we are 'barking up the right tree'? :)
Here's how we think it goes from top down: William MERRILL & ELIZA, -> Richard MERRILL B: 1575 D: 1652 & Elizabeth WEST B: 1594, -> William MERRILL B: 1615 D: 1687 & Alice DUPPA B: 1616,-> Richard Merrill , Sr. B: ABT 1641 in Right Bank Avon, Warwickshire, Tysoe, England D: 19 MAY 1727 in Staten Island, Richmond, NY & Susanna Merrill, -> Phillip Merrill , Sr. B: 17 SEP 1679 in Tysoe, Warwickshire, England D: 18 APR 1739 in Richmond, NY & Elizabeth Baker B: ABT 1704 D: ABT 1759, -> Nicholas Merrill B: 24 NOV 1728 in Richmond, NY D: ABT 1795 & Lydia?, -> Andrew Merrill B: 8 MAY 1757 in Roxbury, Morris Co., NJ D: 25 MAY 1835 in Clark Co., KY Revolutionary War Vet? & Rachel Wiseman,-> William Merrill B: ABT 1790 in Estill Co., KY D: AFT 1820 in Estill Co., KY & Peggy Richardson B: ABT 1790 in KY, -> Andrew D. I put them in there in hopes it might help the tracing.
Thank you in advance!
Answer: Robin [Last name please]:
Thank you for your kind words. Like many hobbies Merrill Genealogy has become almost a disease for us. It is so exhilarating when we are able to solve someone's brick wall.
We gather from your query that Arthur was your Father. Is that correct or was he your grandfather? What is your source for his dates? From the Social Security Death Index the only Arthur listed as dying in Seattle WA has the dates of 1908 Mar 17 -1971 Mar _. His SS# was 346-22-9444, issued in IL. In the 1910 census in MT. Hope, McLean, IL, Arthur was listed as 2 years old, son of Augustus, 37, KY and Myrtle, 37, OH. Also in 1930, in Blomington, McLean, IL, Arthur is 22, still with Augustus and Myrtle. This is consistent with the 1908 b. date from SSDI, but NOT with the 1901 b. date you gave for Arthur. It certainly seems that the Arthur who d. in Seattle was the son of Augustus and Myrtle. If the dates you have are correct, these are two different Arthurs.
The lineage you give for Phillip Augustus is correct at least as far as the male line goes. We are not sure about the wife of Andrew, 1757. We have the wife of Andrew as Ruth, possibly McPherson, but we don't have hard evidence that that was her name. We believe that someone may have confused two different Andrews. An Andrew, ca 1751, son of Capt. Benjamin of NC did m. a Rachel Wiseman of NC, d/o Isaac and Mary (Marshall) Wiseman. That Andrew was in Rowan Co NC at the time your NJ vet Andrew was in Clark and Estill Co KY [1790-1820]
We would be interested in Gus's obituary. We would also like to have detailed info on Arthur's family and his descendants down to the present day, Be assured that we do not publish or give out info on living individuals, nor is our database internet accessible. Do you know anything about Arthur's brothers and their families?
One way to confirm your descent from immigrant Richard would be to have your brother [I'm assuming he has the Merrill surname] to be Y-DNA tested. The DNA associated with the male Y-chromosome is passed from father to son essentially unchanged over many, many generations, tens or hundreds, so barring an adoption or other non-parental event, should follow the surname. Over 100 Merrill males have been Y-DNA tested and several descendants of Richard have been tested and all show the same DNA pattern. The DNA test is run on a simple Q-tip swab of the inside of the cheek. The 37 marker test we recommend costs $149 as part of the Merrill Surname Project, but sometimes they offer a Special for about $119.
General Frank Dow Merrill belongs to a different, and unrelated, Merrill line - immigrant Nathaniel of Newbury MA.
Hope this helps,
Howard and Jean Merrill

After My fathers passing, I found a copy of a marriage for Fred Merrill age 25 to Valeria Langway age 26, on January 27,1900. It states that Fred's father was Cyrus Merrill born in NY, his mother was Eliza Atkins born in Brownington VT. Valeria's father was Louis Langway born in Canada and her mother was Mary Wallace born in Canada. I have a family photo album with a death cert. in it for Joseph Wallace died 1897 at age 58 yrs, 2 mo. was this possibly Mary's brother? I am also just starting to follow our family tree and would like to know more. I have asked my aunts and they know that Fred was my fathers grandfather, who he was named after and is decended from Elmer Merrill and Ida Hall and I know of an Uncle Lewis Merrill who was married to Myrtle. Any help would be very greatly appreciated as anyone who might remember has passed away. I have a sister Christine and we both have sons and grandchildren. In our area they ask the kids to bring in their family tree in 4th grade. My grandson is in 3rd grade and I'm trying to put together a family tree for him. Thank you in advance, for any help you can give me.
Denise (Merrill) Patterson
Your Fred E Merrill and his son Elmer G are in our "Lineage Unknown" file. We found Fred and Valeria in the 1900, 10, 20, and 30 census in Sullivan Co NH, Claremont or Newport. In all these census records, Fred said he was b. Canada. In 1910, Valeria said she had had 3 children and all were living, but none of these children were with them. From another correspondent, one of these children was Louis, b. ca 1902, but we couldn't find record of him. Elmer G was b.1911 Apr 4 and d. 1975 Jan _, in Claremont. We would appreciate any details on Elmer's family and his descendants down to the present. You mentioned an uncle Lewis. Was he your father's brother? Or could he have been Elmer's brother, a great uncle? Where did he live?
We looked in the 1880 US census for Cyrus and Fred, but didn't find them, probably because they were probably in Canada. The were not consistent about where Fred's parents were b., but several said they were b. Canada in contrast to the info in Fred's m. record. We have not yet done an extensive search for Cyrus, but he is not in any of our lineage known databases.
Sorry we couldn't do more in discovering your line,
Howard and Jean Merrill

Question: Mary Brooks wrote:
I'm looking for Silas Merrills' parents. Silas b 1838in VA. Mother is Jane b 1809 VA.Silas married Malvinia Crim 21 Aug 1859 in Green, PA. In 1850census Jane, Silas & Lindsey are living jn Marrion W.VA . There are several Merrill familys on the same page.Jane lists her Occupation as Toll Taker. Family legand is that both Silas & his father ? were curcet riding Preachers. Silas & Malvinia are my GGGrndparents.
We are not sure what Silas's father's name was, but we think it was probably James. His grandparents were Joseph (4) and Elizabeth Batton. In the 1850 census Jane, Silas, and Lindsay were living two doors from Elizabeth (Batton) Merrill, and 3 doors from Burr, one of Elizabeth Batton's other sons. In 1860, Jane and James L [Lindsay] were next door to Elizabeth and another son Austin, and Burr was 3 doors away. Because Lindsay became James Lindsay is the reason we think Silas's dad was probably James. We also think Jane's maiden name was probably Jane Lindsay, but we haven't been able to prove it. Silas's lineage would be Silas (6), [James?] (5), Joseph (4), Nicholas (3), Philip (2), immigrant Richard (1). Richard came to Staten Island NY ca 1680 from Tysoe, Warwickshire, England. More details are available.

We would be very interested in the details of how you descend from Silas so we can add the Merrill info to our database. Do you have male Merrill brothers, uncles or cousins?
The reason we ask is that a male Merrill in your line could be Y-DNA tested and confirm that we have the correct lineage from Richard. The male Y-chromosome is passed from father to son, essentially unchanged, over many many generations [tens or hundreds]. Over 100 Merrill males have been tested including several descendants of Richard. All of Richard's descendants share the same DNA pattern.
