Question: Karin Hildebrand Lau wrote:

Dear Howard and Jean,

I am the gggg-granddaughter of Zulima Merrill Root 1794-1875 (m. Oliver Root 1793-1871). I'm trying to locate definitive proof that Noah Merrill 1765-1827 and Zilema Flower Merrill 1765-? are her parents. I have Noah Merrill's Revolutionary War record (found online atFootnote.com), which lists all of their children, most by name. However, a daughter living in Chautauqua County the same age as Zulima Merrill Root is unnamed. Everything I'm finding tells me they are Zulima Merrill Root's parents, but I can't find the one piece of paper to link them. Can you help?

Thanks!

--Karin

Answer: Karin:

We do not have a primary reference that indicates that Zulima Merrill was the daughter of Noah (6), 1765, and Zulima Flower, but feel certain she was. In THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM BRADFORD, it lists the children of Noah and Zulima, and daughterZulima is among them.

From the Pension application of widow Zulima, the unnamed daughter, 51 in 1845 fits Zulima  Merrill Root, except that she and Olover Root were Franklinville, Cattaragus Co in 1840 and 50, instead of neighboring Chautauqua Co.

Hope this helps,

Howard and Jean Merrill

DNA testing & want to know how it works.

Answer: Dee:

Welcome to the Merrill DNA Genealogy Group. Let us introduce our selves. We are Howard and Jean Merrill. We are co-coordinators of the Group. For thirty years we have been trying to database the Merrill/Merrell family nationwide from the original immigrants down to the present day for all immigrant lines. So far we have info on over 60,000 Merrill males plus their wives and daughters in our database, but we estimate there have been well over a 100,000 so we have a long way to go, and need and appreciate all the help we can get, particularly with the later generations. We use this database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill roots. Be assured that no info on living individuals will become internet accessible from us.

While our database is not internet searchable, we will be glad to search it for anybody and share what we find at no cost. All we ask is that folks share their Merrill data with us so that we can expand our database and do a better job of helping solve Merrill lineage problems. We also use our database to support the work of the Merrill-DNA-Genealogy Group.

We gather from your comment that you are descended from Immigrant Nathaniel of Newbury MA.. We would be very interested in your line. Outline first, then details we don't have later. If you are missing some data we will be glad to try and fill it in, if we have it.

Is you father still living or do you have brothers? The DNA that is most useful in Genealogy is that associated with the male Y-chromosome. It is passed from father to son to grandson, essentially unchanged over many, many generations [ tens, or hundreds or thousands]. So it follows the surname at least as far back as surnames were used by the common folk, ca 1300-1400, unless there was an adoption or other non-paternal event. The DNA pattern shared by male descendants of Nathaniel is a very rare and very distinctive pattern.
The DNA test is run on a simple q-tip swab of the inside of the cheek.

Hello Everyone;

Here is what I have, I had started researching the family years ago & then lost all of it in the San Diego 2003 Firestorm. I have gotten most of this from the family History Centers. Answer 1: Dee:

Thanks for the rundown of Horace Ross's ancestors. We are particularly interested in the source for immigrant Nathaniel's wife Susannah maiden name. When we were in England we searched for record of Nathaniel and Susanah's m. hoping to get her maiden Name from that record, but we didn't find it. We have seen Susannah Peabody in the literature, but have been unable to verify that. We feel comfortable that she was the daughter, by a first m., of Susan, wife of Gregory Wolterton, later proprietor of Hartford, CT. Susannah probably grew up in Gregory and Susan' household, but whether she was ever formally adopted by him is in question. After Nathaniel (1)'s death, second son John (2), while still a minor, went from Newbury MA to Hartford, CT, to live with Gregory and Susan, his grandmother, to learn Gregory's tanning trade. Some sources say Gregory adopted him, but no record of a formal adoption has been found. Eventually John (2) inherited the bulk of childless Gregory's estate.

There are only a couple of correction we would make in what you presented. John (2) was Baptized !634/35 Mar. 13 in Lawford, Essex, England, not Newbury MA. When we were in England we saw the records of the baptism of Nathaniel's first four children in Lawford. So we figure Nathaniel didn't come to Newbury until spring 1639, after daughter Susan was able to travel [bapt 1638 Dec 12]. Nathaniel's brother John procured a lot in Newbury for his brother in the summer of 1638, because he knew Nathaniel was coming, but not yet there.

The other correction is to the b. date of Martha Wood, wife of Thomas, 1715. The cemetery records say she was age 58 when she d. 1793 Jul 12. that would make her b 1735, not 1715. They were m. 1755 Oct 5, and she had 10 children from 1756 to 1777. She would have been 62 with her last child had she been b. 1715.

We would be very interested in the details of Horace G and Horace Ross's families and any Merrill surname descendants down to the present to add to our 60,000+ Merrill male [plus wives and daughters] database Be assured our database is not internet accessible and we don't give out info on living individuals. We use the database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill lineage, and to support the Merrill DNA Genealogy Group.

Answer 2: Dee,

Here's what Steve Merrill of Alabama ( wherstead at gmail.com ) writes about Susanna the wife of Nathaniel(1): http://meryell.com/ I have corrected a couple of typos

It is supposed that Nathaniel Merrill was married before leaving England. No record is found of his marriage in America. If the marriage took place here it was probably at Ipswich, in the short time before the settlement in Newbury. His wife's name was Susanna. Savage, in the "genealogical Dictionary of New England" (published in 1861), says that Nathaniel Merrill married Susanna Jordan. In this he was no doubt following Coffin's "History of Newbury" (published in 1845), and the statement has been frequently copied. Ed [Steve Merrill] note, Nathaniel Merrill [correction by Deane Merrill: Susanna Merrill] did marry Stephen Jorden after Nathaniels death in 1655.

Nathaniel was probably a farmer and is ancestor to all [correction by Deane Merrill: many of ] the Merrills in the U.S.A.. His brother John and wife had a daughter but no sons.

Notes for Susannah Wolterton:
Susannah ........, also known as Susannah Wolterton, was the wife of the emigrant, Nathaniel Merrill. For many years she was thought to be the sister of Gregory Wolterton of Hartford, Conn. Later research shows that she probably is the daughter of Gregory's wife, Susannah (Unknown) by a previous marriage.

From "A Merrill Memorial" by Samuel Merrill, Cambridge, MA 1917-1928

The conjecture has been advanced, and it has even been stated as a fact, that the wife of Nathaniel Merrill was Susanna Wilterton (or Wolterton.) Therefore until proven difference I will have [correction by Deane Merrill: otherwise I will leave ] Nathaniel's wife as Susanna Wolterton.

After the death of Nathaniel Merrill his widow married Stephen Jordan (or Jourdain). Nathaniel Merrill, son of Nathaniel and Susanna Merrill, gave a deed, under date of 16 Aug 1661, to Peter Godfrey of Newbury, in which the phrase occurs, "after the decease of my mother Susanna Jordan," and out of this fact the error regarding the maiden name of Nathaniel's wife grew.

Gregory Wolterton (Wilterton) of Hartford was childless: Susanna Merrill of Newbury was a widow with five sons and a daughter, most of them in their minority. It would have been natural for Gregory Wilterton under these circumstances to write to his kinswoman in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and offer a home and modest fortune to one of the boys. From "A Merrill Memorial" by Samuel Merrill, Cambridge, MA 1917-1928.

I am interested in finding any information on Mary Ann Merrill who married Charles Patterson in Worcester, MD in 1827. I believe she died in Ohio, where I don't know, and had a son named Levin (b.1832) and daughter Rosa(b.1840), my gr-gr-grandmother. After Charles Patterson died, again where is unknown, the two children lived with Henry Patterson in Natchez, 1850. Any information you could share with me about this family would be most appreciated.

Thank you,

Ann

Answer: Ann:

We do not know for sure who your Mary Ann's parents were. Our only clue is from the name she gave her son, Levin. We suspect that she was the daughter of Levin (4) Merrill and Sally Brittingham. Levin was b. ca 1749 and d. before 1828 Mar 11 [the date his will was proved]. So Mary Ann may have named her son for her recently deceased father. Levin did have a daughter Mary. We don't have a b. date for Mary but it should be about in the 1800's which would be about right for her m. to Charles Patterson in 1827. Levin had 3 sons and 7 daughters that we know of. His lineage is Levin (4), John (3,2), immigrant William (1). William (1) came to Somerset Co MD in 1666 as an indentured servant, worked off his servitude, m. Eliza and left 9 son and four daughters when he d. in 1710.

Hope this helps, but realize it is speculation based solely on the name she gave her son.

Had a lot of fun finding the old houses from an old Newburyport map that had family names on the houses. My children are interested from seeing some images from a book Dorothy Miller O'Donnell compiled, she shows some old photos from about 1850.

Answer: Lynne:

We do not know of any electronic images from the Robert Morrill Merrill time period. We found the Newburport Historical Society very helpful. They may know of some images from that time period. They may also know where Robert Morrill Merrill is buried. He d. 1870 Apr 26, ae 69, in Newburyport, of consumption according to the MA vital records.

We would be very interested in the details of Robert Morrill's Merrill surname descendants down to the present day to add to our 60,000 Merrill male [plus wives and daughters] database. Hello....

I just unearthed my grandfather, Thomas Benjamin Merrill's, research of our family line, and he traced it back to Nathaniel Merrill who came to this continent in 1633, I believe. Nathaniel did, in fact, come to the town of Newburyport, MA from Ipswich, England. I want to find out more details about his and the generations below his lives. Also, am I related to to the both of you, Howard and Jean?? I have just started to absorb myself with this research, so excuse any errors in the proper form of asking questions. I very much look forward to hearing back from you.

Yours Truly (from New York City),

Tommy

Answer: Tommy:

Thanks for your query. When and where was your grandfather b.? We don't have him listed, as Thomas Benjamin, in our database, but he may be there as Tom, or Thomas, or Thomas B. Who were his parents and grandparents? With dates and location if you have them. We have literally hundreds of Thomas Merrills in our database of over 60,000 Merrill males, plus their wives and daughters.

Immigrant Nathaniel was bapt. 1601 May 4 in Wherstead, Suffolk, England, a village near Ipswich. While some early references say he and his brother, John, came in 1633, he was still in England to father his first four children from 1634-1638 in nearby Lawford, Essex, England. His brother, John, already in Newbury, obtained a house lot in Newbury for Nathaniel in the summer of 1638, so he was expected as soon as his wife and daughter could travel. We figure he arrived in the spring of 1639, but do not know the exact date or the ship on which they came.

At least on paper we are also descended from Nathaniel, but it appears my great grandfather may have been adopted.

We would very much like to bring your line from Nathaniel down to the present in our database. Our database is not internet accessible, but we will search it for anyone and share what we find, in return for more recent data to add to the database. We use the database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill roots. Be assured that we will not publish or give out info on living individuals, but refer anyone asking back to the one that gave us the data.

Question: John Gage wrote:

Dear Howard and Jean,

I am looking for possible living descendants, with whom I'd like to make contact, of the sons of John Foster Merrill of Winthorpe (1839-1884), who emigrated to the USA and then migrated to Alberta, Canada. I would also be very interested in discovering any photos of their earlier generations. I am descended from William Merrill (1821-1898) John Fosters elder brother who remained in England. I already have most of the info given in IGI, but I have been unable to advance from this point. I also have considerable information on the English branch. Any info would therefore be much appreciated.

Regards,

John Gage

Answer: John:

The only information we have on this family comes from LDS family group sheets which we copied when we were doing Merrill research at the LDS Library in Salt Lake City. We haven't checked but we suspect that this is the same data that is in the IGI. According to that data John Foster d.1884 Mar 24 in Doncaster, Yorkshire England. It is his son, John Boooth that lived in Lehi, Utah, and by 1900 was in Magrath, Alberta and ended up in Calgary Alberta Canada, where he d. 1945 Nov 26. Almost all our research is on Merrills in the US, and we don't have access to many Canadian records. We know that John Booth had 7 daughters and 3 sons, 2 that married, Milton Magrath 1900 and Fredrick Donald, 1904. We assume they have both d, but we don't have dates. Milton Magrath had 5 daughters and 4 sons: John Burr, 1921; Donald Elmer, 1923; Kenneth Reed, 1932; and Milton Mark, 1934, we assume in Alberta. These may also have d. Frederick Donald had 2 daughters and a son, Keith West, 1934, that we know of. Note that we don't follow the daughters after they m. - we just follow Merrill surname. We do have the daughters names and for most who they m. We don't know anything more about these Canadian Merrills.

John Foster had another son, Fred, 1874 Apr 11, who d. 1951 Dec 7 in Brooklyn, Kings NY. He was listed in Lehi UT in 1900, 1910 and 1920, and in San Francisco CA in 1930. He had 4 daughters and 4 sons: Foster Brown 1898 - 1987 July _ in Vallejo, Solano, CA; Fred Leland 1901; John Paul 1915 - 1989 Nov 18 [no d. place listed, but SS# issued in CA; Keith Whiley, 1919 - 2003 May 29 in Brigham City, Box Elder, UT [SS# issued CA]. We don't know anything about the families of these four, but obits might give the children's names and where they lived.

None of this family have corresponded with us so we don't know names, addresses, or phone numbers of any of the living descendants of John Foster. Current info is very difficult to come by with all the concern about identity theft. Even if you were to do a LDS search on those whose names we know their children would probably just listed as "Living". It's very frustrating for genealogists..

If you locate a living Merrill in this line, we would like to make contact with them. We are also part of a Merrill DNA project. To our knowledge, no living male Merrill from this Lincolnshire family has been tested. Do you know any living Merrill males in England that are of this family that might be interested in being tested? The DNA associated with the male Y-chromosome is passed from father to son essentially unchanged over many, many [ tens of hundreds] generations. So barring adoptions or other non-parental event it should follow the surname. We can identify the DNA patterns of the early, pre 1700, Merrill immigrants which are at least 5 different unrelated families. We would be interested if the pattern of the Lincolnshire family matched that of descendants of any of the known immigrants. We don't know where in England some of these immigrants came from.

Sorry we couldn't be more help,

Howard and Jean Merrill

Thank you for your query. We have your GREAT grandfather, Willis, (7), ca 1856 in our database, but we don't have any info on his family, so we don't have info on grandfather, William E (8). You have the lineage correct, except you need another William, the immigrant, at the top of the list. The lineage would be William E (8), Willis (7), Samuel (6), Amos (5), Jonathan (4), Benjamin (3), William (2,1). William (1) came to Staten Island NY, ca 1680 with his brother (?), Richard. He left Staten Island ca 1687, moving first to Middletown NJ, then to Hopewell NJ ca 1704 where he d. in 1724. In the literature there has been confusion between your William (1) and Richard (1)'s son, William (2), but he moved to St Mary Co. MD where he d. 1712.

Ken

Answer: Kenneth:

Your Samuel was b. ca 1800 in Gilmanton, now Belknap, NH to Paul (5) and Abigail Melcher. Samuel (6)'s lineage is Paul (5), Enoch (4), Joseph (3), Abel (2), immigrant Nathaniel (1). He is listed as Paul's child on pg 398 in A MERRILL MEMORIAL, AMM, and as an adult on pages 609-610. This reference lists Sally Kelly as Samuel's wife. We believe this is incorrect, unless she was a first wife and d. soon after m. Your Samuel m. 1822 Oct 13 Mary T Emery of Gilmanton in Loudon. There were two Samuels in Gilmanton in the 1830 census, Paul's brother Samuel (5), 1775, and Paul's son Samuel (6), ca 1800 [listed as Samuel 2nd]. By 1840 neither Samuel is in Gilmanton. Samuel (5) has apparently d. and your Samuel (6) is in Old Town, ME with wife and four sons. He is also in Old Town in 1850, but by 1860 he is in Alton, ME. Do you have a d. date or cemetery listing?

Both Gilmanton Samuel's named a son John and AMM incorrectly has Samuel (6)'s son John m. to Belinda Spencer, but Belinda Spencer is the wife of Samuel (5)'s son John.

In the 1850 census your Samuel (6) and his wife are listed as b. NH, but all the sons were b. ME. In the 1860 census everybody was listed as b. NH. We know son Joseph A, 1827 was b. when they were still in Gilmanton [1830 census], but in 1870 he said he was b. ME. We know sons John, 1840, and Orrin, 1843 were b. after they moved to Old Town. But we don't know when they moved so we don't know about Samuel.

There are two listings for Samuel Jr Merrill in the ME Civil War soldiers, both corporal, one in the 6th ME Inf. Co. E. and the other in the 15th ME Inf. Co F. They could be for the same person. We don't have a casualty listing. There might be a commemorative marker in the Alton Cemetery if he d. in the war.

Hope this helps,

Thank you

Answer: Kim:

We are sorry, we don't have any information on Mary Wood, 1st wife of Dennis Hall Merrill, in fact we didn't have her surname. It is interesting to note that Dennis's mother was also a Wood, Charlotte Wood. Our Database is strictly for the Merrill surname, over 60,000 Merrill males plus their wives and daughters. We record the wife's parents, if that info is given, but don't try to research her family further. Doesn't Mary's immigration record give her parent's names? Did they come with her? We do not have their m. record. Their oldest daughter Carrie was b. in IL, so we suspect they probably m. there.

What do you know of their family and particularly the families of their sons, William, 1872, and Edward, ca 1874, and their Merrill surname descendants down to the present day? We would like bring this line down to the present. Be assured that our database is not internet accessible nor do we give out info on living individuals, but refer anyone asking back to the one who gave us the data. We use this database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill roots.

Dennis Hall (8)'s lineage is Eli (7), Enoch (6,5), Benjamin (4), Daniel (3,2), immigrant Nathaniel (1). More details on this Merrill lineage are available. Dennis's father Eli (7) is listed in Waterford, Oxford, ME in 1840 census and he has 2 males [under 5], so Dennis is a newborn when the census was taken. We question the Nobleboro, Lincoln, ME birthplace for Dennis. In A MERRILL MEMORIAL, one of few errors we have found, relates to the lineage of Eli.

Sorry we don't know more about Mary Wood. After Mary's d. Dennis m. 2nd, ca 1895, another Mary A (__?__), b. IN, 1855 July _.
